The IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Herzl Halevy, admitted responsibility for the failure and will step down from his position on March 6.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzl Halevy today informed Defense Minister Yisrael Katz that he will step down effective March 6. He told Katz: “In recognition of my responsibility for the failure of the Israeli army on October 7, and at the same time when the Israeli army is recording great achievements and is in the process of implementing an agreement to release the hostages, I will request to end my duties on March 6, 2025. In the remaining time, I will complete the investigations (into the failures) and preserve On the IDF forces to meet security challenges, I will transfer leadership of the IDF in a qualitative and comprehensive manner to my successor.
Following Halevy’s announcement, the head of the IDF’s Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, also announced his decision to resign from the IDF. “On October 7th, I failed to defend the Western Negev and its beloved residents,” Winkelman wrote. “This failure will remain etched in me for the rest of my life.”
