IEC CEO promises power for Nvidia supercomputer on time

Today, Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Yisrael Katz and CEO of the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) Meir Spiegler met with Ofer Paz, CEO of the construction company working with Nvidia, and gave him a letter of undertaking that is essentially a declaration that the IEC will build the required substation to provide the energy. The supercomputer that Nvidia is building at Yokne’am and, when completed, is due to be moved to Mevo Carmel Science and Industry Park, about ten minutes down the road.

The supercomputer will be the largest in Israel, the sixth largest in the world, and its construction will cost 200-300 million dollars. It will help Nvidia engineers develop chips and software for AI servers, and will also be available for use by Israeli academic institutions for research.

The IEC and Mevo Carmel Science and Industry Park traded accusations about responsibility for the delay in construction of the power substation. The IEC has now committed to commissioning the substation by the end of 2024, despite the delays in obtaining legal approvals that it has faced in recent months.

“Nvidia’s intention to build the most powerful supercomputer in Israel, and one of the most powerful computers in the world, which will be used to develop artificial intelligence, is an expression of absolute confidence in the Israeli economy and Israeli society,” Katz said. “I have therefore instructed all relevant parties to work immediately to provide Nvidia with the best possible infrastructure for this important project, which will take the emerging countries several steps forward.”

“Despite organizational hurdles, including in planning and construction, IEC personnel will meet the original schedule and complete the energy infrastructure needed for the project on time,” Spiegler said.
