Jumbojet Airlines will start operating daily passenger flights from Mombasa to Zanzibar in September, due to increased passenger demand on the route.
The Kenya Airways subsidiary said flights on the route would be reduced to four times a week during the low season when demand for air travel drops.
The airline launched the route on July 1, with four flights per week. The route is aimed at leisure and business travellers, and charges $113 (Sh14,973) for a one-way ticket between the two destinations.
“We are looking forward to offering a daily flight on this route during the high seasons.
“The peak season starts from July to the first week of September to the second week of January,” Jambojit General Manager Karanja Ndegwa told Business Daily on Tuesday.
Since launching Zanzibar flights, the airline has been heating up competition for customers on a route also served by carriers such as Safarilink and Flightlink.
The route also offers flights to Nairobi, Dubai, Frankfurt, Milan and other destinations.
Jumbojet uses a Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, which can carry between 78 and 82 passengers.
“This move is important not only in facilitating fast and affordable air travel but also in strengthening trade, tourism and cultural ties between Tanzania and Kenya.
“By enhancing connectivity, we are enhancing development along the East African coast,” said Mr. Ndegwa.
