Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is betting that if you loved Wednesday, you’ll love a show about the hairless Uncle Fester.
The show, which is still in talks, would feature actor Fred Armisen reprising his role from Wednesday as Uncle Fester, he of dark and sunken eyes and disconcertingly demented grin, Bloomberg reported. It may not even happen.
“The writers have to figure out the story, the company needs to negotiate contracts with talent, and the schedules of the individuals must align,” the news outlet reported. “But Netflix is eager to establish a pipeline of Addams Family programs to build off the success of Wednesday.”
The rights to The Addams Family are owned by Amazon (AMZN), and the show is produced by MGM, which Amazon (AMZN) also owns. The deal to make Wednesday for Netflix (NFLX) was reportedly made before Amazon (AMZN) paid $8.5B for MGM in 2022.
Wednesday was released in late November of 2022 and became the most-watched English television series in its first week with 341.2M hours, a feat that continued for several weeks.
This is latest spin-off/sequel/prequel type of series among a string of them from Netflix (NFLX) to HBO (WBD), taking a page from the 1970’s and the apparent “golden era” of deriving multiple concepts from a single program, Bloomberg said.
HBO (WBD) has and continues to produce Game of Thrones spin-offs, and Netflix (NFLX) has done the same with Squid Games and Money Heist.
