JERUSALEM (Reuters) – A surface-to-surface rocket fired at central Israel from Yemen landed in an unpopulated area without causing casualties, the Israeli military said on Sunday.
Moments earlier, air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and central Israel, sending residents running for cover.
“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in central Israel, a surface-to-surface missile was identified penetrating central Israel from the east and landing in an open area. No injuries were reported,” the army said.
Loud explosions were heard in the area, which the army said were caused by interceptor missiles being fired. It added that its precautionary guidelines for Israeli residents had not changed.
In July, Iran-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen launched a long-range drone at Tel Aviv, killing one man and wounding four others. The attack prompted Israel to carry out a major airstrike on Houthi military targets near the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, killing at least three people and wounding 87 others.
