Mombasa airport gets new passenger lounge

A Turkish investor has opened a new terminal at Moi International Airport (MIA) in Mombasa, aiming to capitalise on rising passenger traffic through the gateway.

Bosphorus Lounge, designed with a coastal cultural theme, opened its doors over the weekend and spans 10,000 square feet and can accommodate 150 guests.

Miami International Airport Director Abel Gogo said the new lounge will help improve the passenger experience at the facility as the state works to attract more visitors to the coastal tourism circuit.

“As the Kenya Airports Authority, we constantly strive to ensure that our airports reflect the highest standards in service excellence, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Al Baker added that the opening of the Bosphorus Lounge comes within the framework of our continuous efforts to enhance the facilities at Hamad International Airport, and ensure that the growing demand for distinguished amenities is met.

Private lounges provide a quieter environment and often offer better access to customer service representatives.

The lounges also offer space for private meetings, wireless Internet access, and other business services, as well as provisions to enhance passenger comfort, such as complimentary drinks, snacks, magazines, and showers.

“As the airport services industry continues to evolve, we see customers demanding a more seamless and personalised airport experience which has led the company to focus on bringing this experience to Mombasa,” said Cemal Ulman, Director of Bosphorus Limited.

The coastal tourism industry has struggled to grow tourist numbers since the global shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials hope upgrades at Miami International Airport will help boost passenger numbers, which began to rise last year.

Official data shows that the number of passengers arriving at Miami International Airport increased by 82.3 percent last year to 157,000 passengers.

Several airlines are also looking to operate direct flights to Mombasa, a move that is expected to increase passenger numbers.

In January, UAE carrier flydubai launched direct flights from Dubai to Mombasa, joining Kenya Airways on the route.
