Near Protocol’s X page has apparently been hacked by hackers who seem uninterested in promoting fake airdrops or rug pulls.
On September 4, strange posts were seen. Published From the X account of the layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain, Near (NEAR) protocol.
Account hijackings like this are common in the cryptocurrency world, where criminals often target decentralized finance protocols. Hackers typically take advantage of compromised access to launch phishing campaigns and steal funds.
However, the Near Protocol hacker deviated from this pattern, instead posting a series of anti-crypto messages targeting crypto users and the heart of web3.
Delete your X account, get out of the house, and live a normal life, guys. Nothing good will come of this at all. Trust me.
Anonymous Near Protocol Hacker
At the time of writing, unknown individuals still control Near’s X page and continue to criticize the $2 trillion cryptocurrency ecosystem and the underlying blockchain industry. This is the second time L1’s X account has been hacked this year, following a previous incident in May.
Despite seemingly being different from other breaches, Near Protocol ranks among a growing list of DeFi and cryptocurrency-related projects that have suffered hacks.
According to crypto.news, X accounts belonging to members of the Trump family were recently used in a scam to promote the Solana-based memecoin (SOL). In late August, an image of soccer star Kylian Mbappe was used to steal more than $1 million from crypto traders.
The hackers also compromised accounts belonging to heavy metal band Metal Metal, Frax Finance founder Sam Kazemian, and pseudonymous cryptocurrency trader GCR.
