Neflitx wants to add ‘Hot Ones’ to live programming

Netflix Inc. is looking to stream live versions of the popular YouTube talk show HotThat would add to a lineup that will soon include NFL and wrestling matches, people familiar with the matter said.

The company is in talks with BuzzFeed Inc., the owner of the show that features celebrities eating super-spicy chicken wings while chatting with host Sean Evans. The two sides are seeking to reach a deal this month, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks could fall apart.

Under the scenario being discussed, Evans would host several live episodes of Hot This show was created specifically for Netflix. This show is one of the most popular shows ever on YouTube. The average episode gets a few million viewers, while the most popular episode reaches tens of millions. Recent episodes of the show have featured Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Conan O’Brien, and Ariana Grande.

Netflix has been experimenting with live programming for the past two years, hosting a golf tournament, a tennis match and a hot dog-eating contest. Most of those shows had small audiences, but they allowed the company to test its technology as it prepares to host bigger events like two NFL games on Christmas Day and World Championship Wrestling Entertainment.

Netflix has struggled to deliver a hit talk show for on-demand streaming — it ordered and canceled shows from Chelsea Handler and the late Norm Macdonald.

Talk shows have historically been about current events and rely on daily news, which means viewership tends to decline rapidly over time. But the company found some success earlier this year with a shortened version of live shows hosted by comedian John Mulaney. The company also ordered a second season of a live food show, in which chef David Chang cooks for celebrities.

Hot “The Vampire Diaries” is a popular show among brands and live entertainment, and could create additional revenue opportunities for Netflix, which is looking to build its advertising business.
