FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Porsche is sticking to its position in its move to electric cars, bringing forward the end of production of some internal combustion models, the company’s production chief told Automobilwoche magazine.
Porsche board member Albrecht Reimold said the petrol-powered version of the Macan SUV for non-European markets will not be produced after 2026, earlier than initially expected.
“The platform has reached the end of its cycle,” Reimold added.
Reimold was quoted as saying that after the production stop, the company will focus on electric versions of the Macan to push Porsche’s sustainability agenda, even though demand for electric cars has declined.
“I don’t allow the success of the Macan Electric to be defined by one number,” the CEO was quoted as saying.
Reimold added that the internal combustion engine versions of the Boxster and Cayman sports cars, a model range known as the 718, will no longer be produced from sometime next year, and the company is already focusing on the electric versions that will be launched next year.
The petrol versions of the 718 and Macan have already been discontinued for European markets.
