French President Macron accepts the resignation of the French government:

  • The current government is scheduled to continue performing its duties as a caretaker government until a new government is formed.

Through the Presidential Office,

  • Attal renamed interim PM
  • He called on the Republican forces (not the National Rally of Independents or the French Workers’ Party) to work together to form a new government.

After the recent legislative elections in which no political bloc won an absolute majority, the caretaker government will manage current affairs without submitting new laws to parliament or making major changes.

The period will ensure the smooth running of the Olympic Games, which begin on July 26, and give political parties more time to form a ruling coalition after a runoff election on July 7 left the National Assembly without an overall majority.

The New Popular Front, a broad alliance of Socialists, Communists, Greens and the hard-left France Insoumise party, won the largest number of seats, with 193 in the 577-seat lower house.

Macron’s allies came in second with 164 seats, while the far-right National Rally party came in third with 143 seats.
