Putin: We see Orban’s visit as an attempt to restore the dialogue

Viktor Orban met with Putin today and now we get comments from the Russian president:

  • We are grateful for the visit to Moscow.
  • Urban has brought us the Western point of view.
  • Relations with the European Union at their lowest point
  • Orban calls for ceasefire
  • Kyiv does not want to stop the war until it is won.
  • We discussed possible ways to end the conflict.

I wonder if there is growing concern about the Trump presidency in Europe. He has pledged to end the war, though he has not outlined a plan. The fear is that he will cut off aid to Ukraine.

A disorderly collapse of the Ukrainian defenses could mean a flood of refugees into Europe and instability. That could mean the next few months could provide an opportunity to freeze the conflict. Of course, Russia could also see which way the wind is blowing and try to press, though it may sense that Trump is unpredictable.
