KIEV (Reuters) – At least 30 people, including three children, were injured when a Russian guided bomb hit a high-rise apartment building in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine on Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram: “Rescue operations in Kharkiv continue. Russian airstrike. An ordinary multi-storey residential building was damaged. There is a fire and debris between the 9th and 12th floors.”
He posted pictures of smoke and flames rising from the windows of a multi-storey building, where all the windows were shattered.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Sinyubov said civilian infrastructure was also damaged.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, is located near the Russian border and is constantly under attack from Russian bombs, missiles and drones.
“The world must help defend Ukraine from Russian military aircraft, from dozens of guided bombs that claim the lives of Ukrainians every day. This terror can be stopped,” Zelensky said.
Kiev has said it needs to be allowed to use more powerful weapons from the West to inflict more damage inside Russia and weaken Moscow’s ability to attack.
Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians, although it has killed thousands of them since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
