Safaricom has expanded its ultra-fast 5G network coverage to 28 cities across 21 counties in Kenya, enabling its customers in covered areas to enjoy fast connectivity for both their homes and businesses.

The move increases the number from the 11 cities in eight provinces covered when Safaricom first launched commercial use of 5G in October last year, signaling a strong push by the carrier to expand its data business as part of efforts to counter slow growth in the sound. Call proceeds.

When launching the network last year, Safaricom listed the areas with access including Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Kisumu, Mombasa, Kisii and Kakamega.

The new extensions now cover districts such as Kilifi, Kwale, Nakuru, Laikipia, Osen Jesho, Garissa, Kricho and Marsabit.

In a media message on Monday, the telecom giant also announced the introduction of 5G data packages targeting more than 400,000 customers using 5G smartphones with typical speeds between 400Mbps and 700Mbps.

“5G packages are allocated based on usage, and are available on Tunukiwa via the MySafaricom app, Safaricom.com, and USSD *444# or *544#,” Safaricom said.

The telco’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, stressed the importance of increasing 5G coverage, saying it is key to enabling users to explore new capabilities powered by the internet.

“As a digital lifestyle enabler, we are excited about the future of 5G, making it possible to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities, provide access to critical services such as healthcare or stimulate economic growth by connecting small businesses to new opportunities,” said Ndigwa.

In a bid to get Kenyans a taste of the capabilities of 5G, Safaricom has partnered with Chinese technology company Huawei to set up three 5G Experience Centers in Nairobi.

Services located at Safaricom’s Village Market, The Hub and Buruburu Stores contain virtual reality game zones, showcase smart capabilities for homes and businesses and speed test booths.

Expensive 5G smartphones have slowed the initial rollout of 5G, forcing them to switch to Wi-Fi.
