The new foldable smartphones are thinner, faster, and generally better than their predecessors, according to Samsung.

Samsung has added two new devices to its range of foldable smartphones. On Wednesday, the company announced the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Fold 5, along with other devices.

Both foldable smartphones are much lighter and thinner than earlier models. However, the new models have brighter displays and hinges considerably sturdier than others. Available for pre-order at a starting price of $999.99, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is both water and dust resistant and has three stops fitted in its hinge to adjust the flip angle. It also has a large cover display owners can use to access widgets and take selfies.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Fold 5 is a larger phone with a 6.2-inch display that users can fold out to a 7.6-inch screen. Samsung says it is at least 2.4 mm thinner than its predecessor and has a barely noticeable under-display camera. The Fold 5’s starting price is $1,799.99.

Samsung Also Launched a Tab and Smartwatches Along with Foldable Smartphones

Samsung announced three versions of its Galaxy Tab S9 in three different sizes. They include a Tab S9 Ultra at 14.6 inches, a Tab S9+ at 12.4 inches, and a Tab S9 at 11 inches. The new tab comes with an S Pen and a 120-hertz display that supports easy outdoor viewing. Samsung also says that the tab can function like a desktop computer as it mirrors Windows PC apps. Prices start at $799.99.

In addition to the tab and foldable smartphones, Samsung users can expect two smartwatches: the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Watch 6 Classic. Samsung also says these watches are better than their predecessors and come with larger displays, thinner bezels, better battery life, and faster processors. The watches can detect heart rate, and sleep stages, and also help with weight loss, in addition to several other health features.

The Watch 6 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions, priced at $299.99 and $329.99, respectively. For the Watch 6 Classic, the prices for the 43mm and 47mm sizes are $399.99 and $429.99, respectively.

Folding Smartphones and the Competition

Samsung is facing stiff competition in the foldable market from other giant phone makers. In May, Google announced the first Pixel Fold smartphone at its I/O developers conference. Google called it the thinnest folding smartphone on the market, with design specifics like thin camera lenses and a dual-battery arrangement to achieve the size.

In February, Chinese phone maker Oppo launched its Find N2 Flip phone for international markets as the company tries to expand its business interests outside of China. Huawei spinoff Honor also launched a foldable smartphone in February called the Magic Vs.

Despite the competition, Samsung still has the largest share of the foldable market. Though it launched its first foldable smartphone in 2019, Canalys data says the company controlled 80% of worldwide foldable shipments in 2022.
