Scammer seeks victim’s Telegram to return stolen $68m

The hacker who stole $68 million worth of cryptocurrencies has offered to return the assets via the social media platform Telegram.

Blockchain Investigator ZachXBT mentioned The hacker who is believed to be behind the attack and the theft of assets worth $68 million has decided to return the money to the victim.

The attacker left a message on Etherscan.io Chat and ask the victim to send back 51 Ethereum (ETH).

At the time of writing this report, the victim had not responded to the hacker. It is also unknown why the hacker offered to return the stolen assets a week after the theft.

An unknown user lost $68 million in cryptocurrency earlier this month due to inattention and an attack through spam transactions. The victim was tricked into sending the scammers 1,155 WBTC worth over $68 million, becoming a victim of a spam attack.

In this case, the spam attack type is also called a poisoning or dusting attack. Small amounts of cryptocurrency are sent to the target's wallet from addresses that are only a few letters different from the address the victim regularly transfers to.

Despite the significant theft, cryptocurrency project losses due to hacks fell by 141% over the past month, according to CertiK. The reported amount resulting from cryptocurrency hacks reached $21 million. Cryptocurrency projects also lost $4.3 million to exit scams and $129,000 to flash loan fraud.

Since the beginning of 2024, cryptocurrency projects have lost $449 million. The largest attack remains the Orbit Bridge breach, which cost its victims $81.5 million.
