WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Executives from major technology companies including Google, Adobe, Microsoft and Meta Platforms are scheduled to testify next week at a U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on election threats.
A spokesman for Senator Mark Warner, who chairs the committee, confirmed that Kent Walker, head of global affairs at Google parent Alphabet Inc., Nick Clegg, head of global affairs at Meta, and Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, will testify at the hearing on Sept. 18.
U.S. officials are trying to crack down on efforts to spread misinformation and false information online about the Nov. 5 election, which pits Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris against former Republican President Donald Trump. Polls show a close race.
Previous US intelligence assessments have indicated that Russia, Iran and China have tried to interfere in the US election, allegations that those countries deny. They have also alleged that Washington is interfering in their internal affairs, allegations that the United States denies.
Tech executives have previously testified before the US Congress on election-related hearings in recent years.
