This year the S&P 500 has had 32 all-time highs. Why that matters

The S&P 500 hit an all-time high today at 5,523 (and counting). This marks the 32nd day the index has hit a record high in the first half of the year.

Today, Deutsche Bank compares the number of records set this year against historical norms. In short, this year was one of the best ever, with the sixth highest number of records ever set since 1928.

“In the top 10, the average number of ATHs in the first half was 33. For the rest of the year, this group saw an average of another 19 ATHs in the second half with The average price move at 5:00 PM is +5% and the moving average is +10%The only two years out of the top ten H1 ATHs that saw negative H2 price action were 1987 (-19%) and 1983 (-2%). 1983 was the only year out of the top ten that saw fewer than 10 ATHs in the second half. Only one other ATH was seen that year. 1987 saw 14 other H2 ATHs before the crash in October of that year.”
