Thodex Founder Extradited to Turkey After Disappearing with $2.6B User Funds

Faruk Fatih Ozer – founder of cryptocurrency exchange Thodex – has been extradited to his homeland Turkey, where he faces charges of fraud and running a criminal organization.

Thodex was one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in Türkiye. It was later found to be an exit scam, as Özer disappeared with $2.6 billion in crypto funds, leaving around 400,000 users with a high and desiccation dry spell.

  • According to the latest news a report According to state media, the 27-year-old founder was arrested by police upon his arrival in Istanbul.
  • Thodex halted all transactions citing the evaluation of an unspecified partnership offer in April 2021. And while its official website assured users it would be up again soon, executives began deactivating their social media profiles.
  • The platform’s customer support group also became inaccessible shortly thereafter. Founder and CEO Faruk Fatih Ozer too close his Twitter account and reportedly fled to Albania.
  • Sources said he managed to stay undercover for more than a year before law enforcement in Elbasan finally located him and arrested him.
  • After that, Interpol also issued a red notice against Ozer for his arrest.
  • A Turkish court jailed six people, including two brothers of the CEO, a month after the scandal. The other four were senior employees of the company.
  • Authorities have also detained 62 people linked to the Thodex scam.
