(Reuters) – U.S. airlines canceled more than 1,300 flights and delayed more than 1,000 on Monday as Hurricane Beryl strengthened and made landfall in Texas.
Flight tracking website FlightAware reported a total of 1,361 flights had been canceled and 1,014 flights delayed as of 9:06 a.m. ET.
United Airlines topped the list with 405 flight cancellations, followed by Southwest Airlines (NYSE:) with 268 flights.
“We continue to monitor Beryl and have reduced flights at Houston International Airport (IAH) Sunday night and Monday,” United Airlines said in a statement.
Southwest Airlines said it was monitoring the situation and had proactively adjusted its flight schedule Monday in Houston and South Texas due to the hurricane.
United and Southwest also issued travel warnings, saying Hurricane Beryl was impacting flights at airports including Austin, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, Houston and others in the area.
Hurricane Beryl, the oldest Category 5 hurricane on record this season, made landfall near the coastal town of Matagorda, Texas, early today, bringing dangerous storm surges to the coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Texas’ largest ports also closed operations and ship traffic on Sunday as Storm Beryl intensified.
The Federal Aviation Administration warned Friday of thunderstorms affecting travel across the country.
