US spaceflight company Virgin Galactic is poised for a highly anticipated milestone as it prepares to launch its first spaceflight in nearly two years.

This crucial flight is the final test for Virgin Galactic Holdings (NYSE:SPCE) before the company begins flying commercial passengers, marking an important step forward in realizing its vision of space tourism.

The mission, called Unity 25, marks the company’s fifth spaceflight and is expected to launch from Spaceport America in New Mexico. according to reportsOn this mission, six Virgin Galactic employees will travel on the jaunt to the edge of space.

Notably, VSS Unity will be piloted by Virgin Galactic’s Mike Masucci and CJ Sturkoff, while the VMS Eve carrier aircraft will be piloted by Jamil Janjua and Nicola Bissell. Notably, the company has 600 tickets booked for upcoming flights, priced between $200,000 and $250,000 each.

Unlike its previous mission, which carried founder Sir Richard Branson, in July 2021, Virgin Galactic has said it will not publicly broadcast the flight. Instead, the company intends to provide updates on Unity 25’s progress via social media platforms.

According to the details provided, the VMS Eve carrier aircraft is scheduled to take off at 10 a.m. ET. This mission will see the aircraft carrying Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity spacecraft rise to about 40,000 feet, before launching the rocket-powered vehicle to continue its journey.

Once launched from the carrier aircraft, VSS Unity will fire its engine, propelling itself into the sky. The goal of this flight is to exceed an altitude of 80 kilometers, which is the internationally recognized space limit in the United States.

At this altitude, passengers aboard the VSS Unity will experience the incredible sense of weightlessness and look at Earth from the amazing perspective of space. Based on the results and data from Unity 25, the company hopes to fly its first commercial flight in “late June.”

By reaching the limits of space, Virgin Galactic aims to push the limits of what is possible and inspire future generations. This flight is the culmination of years of careful planning, engineering progress, and rigorous testing.

The potential impact of a Virgin Galactic flight

Virgin Galactic’s attempt to break through this barrier is a demonstration of its technological capabilities and a step toward its ultimate goal of making space travel accessible to the general public. Lessons learned from these flights will be used to enhance and improve systems and processes, ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers in the future.

Virgin Galactic’s success goes beyond tourism. The data and knowledge that will be gained during this journey will help advance scientific research and technology. It will provide key insights into the effects of microgravity and spacecraft behavior and potential uses in a variety of sectors.

Moreover, Virgin Galactic’s determination and dedication will be a major challenge for other companies including SpaceX and Blue Origin working towards similar goals.
