YouTube dominated Election Day as viewers guzzled 84 million hours of presidential news

As people around the world watched the results of the US presidential election, millions committed themselves to live streaming and digital platforms.

Stream Charts, a database of live streaming statistics and analysis, I mentioned Total live streaming data reached 84 million hours watched, with the lion’s share – 80.6% – on YouTube. Online video platform Rumble, often a popular choice with conservatives, came in second with 13.1%. Fox News was the most popular broadcast live on YouTube, with a record 1.14 million viewers, according to Stream Charts data. NBC News came in second behind Fox, with 616,900 viewers, according to the live broadcast report.

On the other hand, Nielsen I mentioned Traditional broadcast and cable TV operations attracted 42 million viewers spread across 18 television networks, with that number tuning in from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. That represents a decline of more than 25% from the 2020 election cycle, which attracted 56.9 million viewers in prime time, according to Nielsen data. Fox News Channel’s prime-time coverage, including Fox News Digital, outperformed all television networks by 13.6 million viewers, Fox News announced Wednesday. Fox’s digital platforms saw record engagement, marking their best day since 2020 in terms of page views, media and minutes spent. The company reported that Fox News Digital received 47.2 million views of its live broadcast between the evening and the early hours of the morning.

said Nazar Babenko, Product Manager at Streams Charts luck Live streaming platforms attract viewers because they allow back-and-forth. “It’s not just about watching anymore; people are actively discussing and interacting in real time, reshaping electoral discourse in the process,” Babenko said.

Even before the election, political events were prompting greater engagement on live streaming platforms, he said. The number of political references on Amazon-owned live streaming platform Twitch in its conversations rose and fell along with the dynamics of the Republican and Democratic presidential campaigns. After Kamala Harris participated in a town hall event on CNN, mentions of her on Twitch rose by 39.5%. The September debate between Harris and Donald Trump saw a peak of nearly 8 million concurrent viewers and 17 million hours watched globally, Babenko said. This has sparked streams of controversy ahead of other popular live streaming events including Apple’s 2024 event, the League of Legends North American professional league’s summer event, and the Call of Duty League 2024 qualifiers.

In October, about 5,600 channels on eight platforms mentioned Donald Trump’s name in nearly 24,000 live stream titles, according to Stream Charts. Streams drove 49 million hours of content watched. Their analysis found that streams on Twitch, YouTube, and Rumble had the highest frequency of mentions of Trump.

“This evolution in political campaigning reflects a dynamic shift in which younger audiences — often reached through live streaming or live debates — are shaping the future of democracy, right now, both within the United States and around the world,” Babenko said.
