Now, even Microsoft (MSFT) – Get a free reportProprietary OpenAI may be looking to slow things down and take a deeper look at how AI applications can be used with tools like ChatGPT.

This review process gained momentum at AI Forward, the artificial intelligence industry conference held in San Francisco this week.

The event, hosted by investment banking giant Goldman Sachs and SV Angel, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, saw OpenAI’s top executives reimagine where AI is going with chatbot technology.

One way down a more fence-oriented AI path is through a collective Wikipedia-like approach to collecting and sharing raw information that appears on ChatGPT and other AI-powered chatbots.

“We’re not sitting in Silicon Valley thinking we can write these rules for everyone,” Greg Brockman, head of OpenAI, told conference attendees. “We’re starting to think about democratic decision-making.”

Brockman hinted at a Wikimedia-style approach to AI, where unilateral decision-making about what information is fed to intelligent chatbots gives way to a more collaborative approach, with many diverse hands at the wheel of AI.

“The governance of the most powerful regimes, as well as decisions about their deployment, must be subject to strong public oversight,” Brockmann wrote in a separate letter. May 22 on the OpenAI blog, along with company executives Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskiver. “We believe that people around the world should democratically decide the limits of AI systems and virtualization.”

The blog post noted that OpenAI “doesn’t yet know how to design such a mechanism,” but said the company plans to “experiment with developing it.”

The authors stated: “We still believe that within these broad boundaries, individual users should have a great deal of control over how the AI they use behaves.”
