AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ:ASTS) jumped out of the open and held a gain of 3% Tuesday after reporting a successful demonstration of a 5G voice-and-data connection between earth and space.
The company’s engineers placed a 5G call from Hawaii to a Vodafone engineer in Madrid using AT&T spectrum and AST SpaceMobile’s BlueWalker 3 test satellite, and an unmodified Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphone.
The call took place near Hana, Hawaii, in a wireless dead zone.
“Once again, we have achieved a significant technological advancement that represents a paradigm shift in access to information. Since the launch of BlueWalker 3, we have achieved full compatibility with phones made by all major manufacturers and support for 2G, 4G LTE, and now 5G,” ASTS CEO/Chairman Abel Avellan said.
