WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden called Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday to congratulate him after his Labour Party’s landslide victory in parliamentary elections, the White House said.

“The two leaders affirmed the special relationship between our two countries and the importance of working together to advance freedom and democracy around the world,” the White House said in a statement.

Biden said he looked forward to working closely with Starmer on a range of critical issues including support for Ukraine against Russia and the Good Friday Agreement, as well as working with Northern Ireland’s leaders on economic growth and opportunity.

The White House said the US president looks forward to welcoming Starmer to Washington next week for a NATO summit marking the alliance’s 75th anniversary.
