ChatGPT owner OpenAI to open first foreign office in UK

The US company behind ChatGPT said its first international office will be based in London.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the move was “an opportunity to attract global talent”.

It comes after he criticized legislation proposed by the European Union to regulate artificial intelligence, which would require companies to disclose content used to train their systems.

Meanwhile, the UK is planning what it calls “Pro-innovationsystems.

When ChatGPT hit the scene last November, the chatbot’s ability to provide human-like answers to questions sparked intense global interest in the latest AI-powered products.

It has also sparked debate about potential threats to artificial intelligence – and what regulations are needed to mitigate these risks.

Altmann, at an event at University College London in May, said he believes AI can create jobs and reduce inequality.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said at the event that AI could “positively transform humanity” and “deliver better outcomes for the British public, with opportunities emerging in a range of areas to improve public services”.

Speaking on the news, Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Chloe Smith said: “OpenAI’s decision to expand into London as its first international office is another vote of confidence for Britain as a powerhouse of AI, in OpenAI’s words our vibrant technology ecosystem and exceptional talent.

“Our AI sector already employs more than 50,000 people across the country, and we will continue to foster an approach that unlocks opportunities and cements our position as a global destination for AI.”
