Factbox-Patriot in focus amid missile defense system shortage By Reuters

0 3

(Reuters) – As the Ukrainian military suffers from a shortage of missile defense systems amid Russia's bombing of its energy infrastructure, the focus is on Patriot systems, which have helped Kiev defend itself against attacks.

What is the Patriot system?

The Phased Tracking Target Interdiction Radar, or PATRIOT, is an advanced surface-to-air missile defense system recognized as one of the most advanced air defense systems in the United States arsenal.

Process mechanics

A mobile missile defense system usually consists of a powerful radar, control station, power generators, launch stations and additional support vehicles.

Its capabilities vary based on the type of interceptor deployed. An interceptor is a projectile fired at an incoming missile with the aim of shooting it down.

The PAC-2 interceptor missile features a fragmentation warhead, while the PAC-3 missile uses advanced hit-to-kill technology.

Manufacturing and supply chain

The Patriot system is supported by two major prime numbers. Raytheon (NYSE:), under RTX, manufactures radar and ground systems, while… Lockheed Martin The Missile and Fire Control Division (NYSE:) manufactures interceptor missiles.

Production and business scope

The much sought-after Patriot system has been profitable for these contractors. Production of Patriot interceptor missiles is increasing at a rate of 100 missiles annually. With each missile costing about $4 million, this represents a potential increase of $400 million in annual sales from just one weapon system.

Boeing (NYSE:), which makes the sensor that guides the Patriot missile, is increasing its production capacity by more than 30%.

Other well-known defense systems

In addition to the Patriot defense systems, other well-known defense systems include the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, designed to intercept and destroy short, medium and medium-range ballistic missile threats in the terminal phase of their flight. It is published in South Korea.

The Ground-Medium Defense (GMD) system can intercept and destroy long-range ballistic missiles during their mid-flight phase.
