(Reuters) – Energy facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast were assessing damage on Thursday from Hurricane Francine, which tore through offshore oil production areas and hit the Louisiana coast on Wednesday.
Hurricane Francine brought heavy rains and gusty winds to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, causing widespread power outages and impacting offshore and onshore operations. Oil and gas producers on Thursday also cut production due to onshore power issues. Meanwhile, export ports in South Texas have begun to reopen.
The U.S. Gulf region accounts for about 15 percent of total domestic oil production and 2 percent of gross domestic product, according to federal data. Storm disruptions could impact U.S. oil supplies, putting pressure on energy prices.
UBS said in a note that Hurricane Francine could disrupt about 1.5 million barrels of U.S. oil production, which would reduce September output in the Gulf of Mexico by about 50,000 barrels per day.
The ports of Corpus Christi, Brownsville and other small Texas ports are now open without restrictions as Francine passes through Louisiana. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the ports of Huima, Morgan City and the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port have been closed to traffic.
