Detailed investigation leads to conviction

St. Felix, who faced multiple charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping and robbery under the Hobbs Act, was convicted of using extreme measures to forcibly extract cryptocurrency assets from his victims.

The trial highlighted the harsh realities faced by victims who not only endured the theft of their cryptocurrencies, but were also subjected to physical violence and intimidation. According to trial evidence presented in April 2023, St. Felix, accompanied by an accomplice, broke into the residence of one of the victims.

Inside, they assaulted one of the victims, bound him with zip ties, and held him at gunpoint. During this time, St. Felix and his accomplice threatened further harm to the victim and his wife as other accomplices transferred more than $150,000 in cryptocurrency from the victim’s account.

U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Hairston for the Middle District of North Carolina noted:

The victims in this case suffered a horrific and painful experience that no citizen should have to go through. The defendant and his co-conspirators acted out of greed and brutally terrorized those they targeted.

Notably, the successful conviction of St. Felix was the culmination of a “detailed and extensive” investigation led by the FBI’s Charlotte Field Office, in collaboration with various other field offices and local police departments, according to the report.

Investigators used advanced forensic techniques to trace the encrypted communications and money laundering methods used by St. Felix and his associates. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, Chief of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, stated:

St. Felix and his co-conspirators targeted victims across the United States for brutal home invasions, kidnappings, and robberies in order to steal cryptocurrencies. Although members of this violent conspiracy attempted to cover their tracks through encrypted communications and anonymous financial transactions, they were never beyond the reach of our dedicated investigators and prosecutors.

The dark side of encryption

Meanwhile, this condemnation comes against the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in various illegal activities.

A recent report from the US Treasury highlighted a significant increase in the use of cryptocurrencies in crimes such as human trafficking and sexual exploitation, with more than $412 million reported in such cases over two years.

These reports highlight the dark side of cryptocurrencies and underscore the need for stricter regulatory frameworks and enhanced monitoring mechanisms to combat crypto-related crimes.
