Apple has issued a warning to decentralized social networking company Damus to be expelled from the App Store if it does not remove a feature that allows Bitcoin payments.

Damos, which is based on top of the decentralized social media protocol Nostr, was developed as an alternative to Twitter and supported by Jack Dorsey. Since its debut in February of this year, the application has faced great difficulties when trying to be included in the global Apple App Store due to its decentralized nature, which is usually associated with a lack of content moderation.

In the latest development, Damus has taken to Twitter to reveal which gave the tech giant 14 days to remove a feature called “Zaps”. Allows Bitcoin rewards to be distributed as tips via Lightning Network tool integration. Apple has claimed that this feature violates the in-app purchase requirements.

The social media app attached a screenshot of the tech giant’s warning, which noted its feature that allows users to send “tips” linked to receiving content from digital content creators with a mechanism other than in-app purchase.

Apple said that “While tips or donations may be optional if connected to or associated with receiving digital content, they should use in-app purchase in accordance with the Guidelines.”

“This will be a watershed moment: if people can’t transact freely peer-to-peer on their own platform, it will have massive implications for the entire ecosystem of apps with lightning and v4v integration.”

This isn’t the first time Damos has run into trouble. Last month, the app was banned from the Chinese Apple App Store.

Urging Apple to correct its mistake, one of the creators of Nostr explained that users of the Damus app do not “receive content from digital content creators” and that the content is published on the network across many clients, and is completely free for all.

He added that users are not “paying for content” and “nothing is being purchased”.

Several members of the community have drawn attention to Twitter itself which also has a tipping feature and Accused Favorite play apple.
