JCB, the JCB manufacturer, has announced plans to double the size of its new factory in the United States, in response to a 10 % newly imposed tariff for all UK imports.
Staffordshire, one of the largest companies owned by the private sector in Britain, will expand the planned San Antonio facility in Texas from 500,000 to one million square feet, as part of a strategy to expand the scope of American manufacturing operations and protect its market position in North America.
The factory of $ 500 million, which is scheduled to start production in 2026, will employ up to 1500 workers and manufacture telescopes and air access equipment for the American market.
“President Trump has evaluated us to assess how we can make more products in the United States of America, which was an important market for JCB since we sold our first machine there in 1964,” said Lord Bamford, Chairman of the JCB Board of Directors.
He added that the company “used to change” and that the United States remained “the largest construction equipment market in the world.”
JCB has already runs a factory in Savana, Georgia, which employs about 1,000 people. The company bought a 400 -acre site for its new facility in Texas last year, but the revised plans reflect an urgent need to localize production as the impact of the new American commercial tariffs waving.
Grame Macdonald, CEO of JCB, said the definitions will have a “great impact” on work, but stressed that the expanded San Antonio factory will help reduce these effects in the medium term.
He said: “We are grateful because the customs tariff is only 10 percent, and we can only hope that the UK government will conclude negotiations on a commercial deal in the coming days and weeks.”
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds responded to calm, saying that the government is still “committed to doing this deal, which we hope to reduce the impact of what has been announced.”
JCB was founded in 1945, now runs 22 manufacturing sites on four continents and employs more than 12,000 people worldwide. The company was 14 % in 2023 to 2023 to 6.5 billion pounds, and jumped 44 % in pre -tax profits to 805.8 million pounds.
JCB has grown in North America strongly, and was partially raised through important contracts with the US military. In 2020, she got a deal worth 217 million pounds to provide a fleet of high -speed excavators for the army. Recently, the company has received a request of $ 19 million from the US Navy to submit up to 206 compact telescopes.
As the geopolitical scene continues to shift, the latest step from JCB indicates how to view risk processes by investing in topical supply chains-and strengthening relations with major markets such as the United States.
