A Nevada man was arrested with a rifle, a loaded handgun and ammunition in his car at a security checkpoint outside Donald Trump rally Saturday night Sunday in the Southern California desert, authorities said. He was released on Saturday on $5,000 bail.
The Riverside County Police Department said in a statement that the 49-year-old suspect, a resident of Las Vegas, was driving a black SUV that was stopped by deputies assigned to the march at Coachella, east of Los Angeles.
The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a large-capacity magazine, the department said.
“This incident did not affect the safety of former President Trump or the event participants,” the statement said.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on January 2, 2025, according to online records.
Members of the media, as well as VIP ticket holders, were directed through a number of intersections manned by state and local law enforcement officers before arriving at a large grassy area where drivers were required to open the hood and trunk, and each vehicle was searched by a marshal.
