Netanyahu says Gallant to remain Defense Minister

31

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ended a briefing on the security escalation by announcing that Yoav Gallant would continue as defense minister. Netanyahu backtracked after Galant’s dismissal last month for declaring that the government’s judicial reform threatened the country’s security readiness during a sensitive period of threat from all fronts.

Gallant’s dismissal sparked massive spontaneous protests and led to a general strike, forcing Netanyahu to halt judicial reform and agree to settlement talks under the auspices of President Herzog. Netanyahu reportedly demanded an apology from Gallant in order to reinstate him, but has now done so without any apology.

During his security conference, Netanyahu blamed the previous government for the current rise in terrorism and reports that Israeli soldiers are refusing to act makes the country appear weak to its enemies. He also blamed the previous government for “handing over the gas fields to Lebanon without getting anything in return.”

Netanyahu also stressed that the planned new National Guard would not be subject to National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, but rather to a “security apparatus”.
