Slovakia buys IAI air defense system in €560m deal

1

Israel and Slovakia have completed the largest defense export deal ever between the two countries, worth €560 million (more than NIS 2 billion), for Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). MX Barracks Air defense system. The system is designed to deal with current and future air threats, including ballistic missiles.

The Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Major General (Res.) Eyal Zamir, signed the agreement at the military headquarters in Tel Aviv. From the Israeli side, the deal was led by Brig. Gen. (Res.) Yair Kulas, Director of SIBAT, Directorate of International Defense Cooperation of the Israeli Ministry of Defense; IAI CEO Boaz Levy; And the dean. Gen. (Res.) Gai Bar Lev, executive vice president and general manager of IAI’s Missile and Space Systems Group.

The Barak MX system supports different types of radars and launchers for coverage against combat aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, surface-to-air missiles and surface-to-surface missiles. The system relies on a sophisticated, operationally proven control center that facilitates the integration of multiple interceptor missiles: the Barak MRAD short-range interceptor missile, which is launched vertically at high speed to engage threats at a distance of 35 kilometers, and carries a radar missile. A guided warhead with a single pulse rocket engine; The Barak LRAD medium-range interceptor missile, for threats up to 70 kilometers away, with a dual-pulse engine; The long-range Barak ER, equipped with a dual-pulse rocket motor and booster, has a range of 150 kilometers.

The engines of various interceptor missiles are produced by the state-owned Tomer company. The only model used in the Israeli air defense system is the Barak LRAD system, which was tested in August. The Barak LRAD system was installed on Saar 6 warships of the Israeli Navy. In the trial, the system intercepted a missile launched against a target simulating a “strategic naval asset” – supposedly a gas production platform, which the SAR 6 ships were designed to protect.

In November last year, the Barak MX system was sold to Azerbaijan in a deal worth $1.2 billion. Israel and Greece are currently negotiating the sale to Greece of a multi-layered air defense kit that includes several Israeli systems.
