BARRIE, Ontario, Nov. 19, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A new poll, conducted during National Bread Month, shows Canadians are overwhelmingly nostalgic for the smell of fresh bread and open about fresh bread and sandwiches.

Canadians are very nostalgic, and fresh bread comforts them
The survey tapped into Canadians’ deep appreciation for high-quality bread and the convenience it brings. The survey of more than 1,500 Canadians showed that Canadians of all age groups overwhelmingly (98%) feel nostalgic and comforted by the smell and texture of freshly baked bread.

“Homemade bread is clearly one of Canada’s age-old comfort foods,” said Chris Sonnen, president of Topper. “Although pizza and sandwiches may seem like distinct culinary creations, they share a common foundation – the dough used.”

The survey found that the different ways in which bread can be used – especially when it comes to sandwiches – generate a lot of spirited debate among different generations.

Bread, behaviors, and the battle of generations
No study of tradition is sound without some generational differences. In fact, the study found some slight disparities between different age groups. Specifically, Gen Z adults are most likely to strongly agree (45%) that bread has cultural significance beyond nutrition, unlike Boomers, of whom only 33% feel this way.

Additionally, 76% of Gen Z say that an authentic sandwich should contain two pieces of bread with toppings in between.; This compares to only 64 percent of baby boomers who need their fillings with bread.

Meanwhile, baby boomers (79%) are much more likely than baby boomers (61%) to say The sandwich can include any non-traditional bread options (e.g. hamburger/hot dog bun, wraps, taco shell, naan, banh mi, pita, etc.). Baby Boomers (49%) also feel more comfortable eating a sandwich with a knife and fork than Baby Boomers (34%).

Carbohydrate awareness
Fear of carbohydrates is somewhat stronger among older generations, with 22% of Generation X and baby boomers avoiding sandwiches as a result. In comparison, only 13% of Gen Z and Millennials reported being afraid of carbs.
