In the past two months, I attended Build Bitcoin Cape Town A conference in South Africa and The African Bitcoin Conference In Kenya. I also visited the circular economies of bitcoin in both countries, including Bitcoin Eikasand Afribit Kibera and Bitcoin Witsand.
These experiences have opened my eyes to the fact that developers, community leaders and daily PLEBS throughout Africa are mocking the Bitcoin power to stimulate change in their lives, and they do this while carrying the early spirit of CypherPunks.
African Bitcoiner Statement
in “CypherPUNK statementEric Hughes books:
Writing CypherPUNKs is a symbol. We know that someone must write programs to defend privacy, and since we cannot get privacy unless we all do, we will write it. We publish our code so that our colleagues from CypherPUNKS can train and play with it. Our symbol is free for everyone to use, in All over the world. We do not take care of the program.
With this position that the builders are adopted in Africa. Although all the builders on the continent write a symbol, they all do all as much as possible their work without demanding permission.
Therefore, based on what I saw in Africa during my last trip to the continent, as well as on my trip to Ghana in late 2023, I attended during the African Bitcoin Conference, his ministry Bitcoin twoI will photograph the African Bitcoiner version of the Hughes’ statement may read something like this:
African Bitcoiners is just building things with bitcoin. We know that someone must go up to the age of change, because all promises of NGOs and governments have decreased. We publish our work proof online so that African Bitcoiners colleagues can use it as a model and adapt it to their unique context Our evidence for work and/or the code is free in repetition throughout Africa. For changing and non -pending to bitcoin as well as nature that cannot be determined for the human spirit, and therefore cannot be stopped or closed. “
Here are some examples of projects that embody such a spirit:
Bitcoin Eikas
Bitco Ekasi is one of the most bright manifestations of CypherPunk and Bitcoin ethics in Africa. The project, which started in 2021 and its headquarters in the Gulf of Mossel, South Africa, became a model for Bitcoin circular economies Throughout Africa.
The project, founded by Hermann Vivier (one of the organizers to adopt Bitcoin Cape Town) to do two things: collecting money in Bitcoin in favor of Server children Not profitable, which is also established by Vivi, and the shops on board in society to Bitcoin. (The Commander of the Project Society I would not do love The latter has done brilliantly over the years.)
The purpose of the second dimension of the mission was to enable community members to spend bitcoin within society, which perfectly raises the economic situation of society as a whole in this process.
The project is now working with the local public primary school, which recently started accepting Bitcoin to obtain school fees, and renewed the community centers of Bitcoin Ekasi and Surfer Kids (partially thanks to generous donations from Jack Dorsi and the fundraising efforts before Aubbari Strubel))

Some politicians in the country, many of whom spoke in adopting Bitcoin Cape Town this year, have noticed the project, and as a result they started seeing the value of Bitcoin.
presence
presence It is an application designed by a team -based team in Kenya that allows Bitcoin Lightning Wallets interface with a mobile phone system in Kenya M-PESA.
The application, which does not require KYC and very intuitive, is one of the greatest tools for financial inclusion in the country, as those who lack the appropriate breaks from payment of payments via M-PESA. Using Tando, they can pay a Lightning portfolio and deal digitally with their Kenyan colleagues.
Tando is also a great option for Bitcoin visiting Kenya. I used it several times during my stay in Kenya to pay the Kenyan fried tabs digitally.

Bitcoin Dua was founded in 2023, located in Agbozume, Ghana, which is near the country’s borders with Togo. It was quickly established as one of the fastest circular economies of Bitcoin in Africa.
The project not only helps educate Ghanaians about Bitcoin, but also provides coding chapters and robots to help members of his community develop skills that can help them find a work that is pushed in Bitcoin.

They drink
Founded in May 2022 by Kgothatso Ngako (KG) (also a organizer to adopt Bitcoin Cape Town),,. They drink Africans enable Bitcoin to light up with feature phones (i.e. mobile phones before smartphones).
This technology allows users to send Bitcoin via USSD, equivalent to SMS in Africa, and giving some of Two -thirds of Africa’s population cannot access the Internet Access to bitcoin.
KG is also currently on technology that will store special keys to Bitcoin on the chips included in distinctive phones, which mainly allows these phones in the six African countries where the service is available for service Double as the governor of bitcoin devices.

Afribit Kibera
Afribit Kibera, located in Kenya, is a Bitcoin circular economy located in the largest Unofficial settlement In Africa.
The co -founder of the project, Ronnie Mdawida, has been a lawyer and human rights for a long time, and he is now using Bitcoin as a tool to help achieve more exaltation and exposure in the economy.
MDAWIDA and his team dismantled 40 merchants to Bitcoin so far and created a recycling program rewarding the participants with Sats for their work.

AFRIIBIT KIBERA (AFRIBITKIBERA) January 15, 2025
While many merchants and community members of Afribit Kibra were introduced to Bitcoin mainly as a means of exchange, many have begun to save in it, and they feel more hope for their future as a result.
Moving forward together
Although each of the above projects is incredible in itself, what makes the story of Bitcoin in Africa really distinctive is that members of all these projects are still learning from each other.
This is the beauty of the open programs for the source, but also conferences such as Bitcoin Cape Town and the African Bitcoin Conference, where the builders through the continent share their successes and challenges in addition to providing support to each other.
If you have not yet attended one of these conferences, I strongly recommend you to that, especially if you want to feel the snp the spirit of CypherPunks or those who embody the ethics of Bitcoin.
The African Bitcoin is not waiting for permission to change their lives and the lives of those around them. Bitcoin gives them the opportunity to build a brighter future – together.
