Only a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas will prevent them from retaliating against Israel for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, three senior Iranian officials told Reuters.

One of the sources, a senior Iranian security official, told Reuters that Iran, along with its allies such as Hezbollah, would launch a direct attack on Israel if the Gaza talks failed or if it felt Israel was prolonging the negotiations. The sources did not say how long Iran would allow the talks to progress before responding.
