US stocks rebound into the close.

Major indexes rose strongly at the close as end-of-month flows erased previous declines:

  • The Dow Jones index rose 574.84 points, or 1.51%, to 38,686.31 points. The gain was the biggest one-day gain since November 2, 2023
  • The Standard & Poor's Index rose 42.03 points, or 0.80%, to 5,277.50 points. At session lows, the S&P fell by -43.79 points
  • The Nasdaq fell -2.06 points, or -0.01%, to 16,735.02. At session lows, the Nasdaq was down -291.54 points

The Russell 2000 small-cap index rose 13.52 points, or 0.66%, to 2,070.12.

For the trading week:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average fell -0.98%
  • The S&P snapped a 5-week winning streak with a decline of -0.51%.
  • The Nasdaq has had a five-week streak of gains with a decline of -1.10%.

The story was different for May:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average rises 2.3%
  • The Standard & Poor's index rose 4.8%.
  • The Nasdaq index rises 6.88%, its largest gain in 2024 and since November 2023.
  • The Russell 2000 rose 4.87%, its biggest gain since February 2024
